Cooperation with Bombardier Aerospace expanded on new aircraft families

• FACC receives two major orders in fiscal year 2012/13
• The proven expertise in the development of fairings constitutes the cornerstone for the expansion of FACC’s relationship with Bombardier Aerospace

The cooperation between FACC and Bombardier Aerospace shows an extremely positive progression. The Canadian aircraft manufacturer has selected FACC as a supplier for its new aircraft, the Global 7000 and Global 8000 aircraft. FACC is responsible for the development and manufacture of the wing-to-body fairings for the Global* 7000* and Global 8000* aircraft models, which are currently in the development phase.

“Whether it is timeliness in development and implementation that is called for, FACC is a reliable supplier of wing-to-body fairings to the world's third largest manufacturer of passenger aircraft,” says Walter Stephan, CEO of the FACC AG, about FACC’s special services.

Bombardier Aerospace is a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative aviation products and a provider of related services for the business, commercial, amphibious and specialized aircraft markets. FACC components can be found aboard Bombardier Aerospace’s Global 7000, Global 8000 and Challenger 300* aircraft. For the latter model, FACC delivers not only the wing-to-body fairings, but also the passenger cabins while the Global 5000* aircraft are fitted with engine components from FACC.

FACC’s cooperation with Bombardier began at the end of the 1990s when developing the wing-to-body fairings for the Challenger 300. Since 2000, FACC has supplied the wing-to-body fairings for this aircraft model that is still being produced today.  “FACC's reliable performance is a fundamental driver in Bombardier Aerospace's decision to again contract FACC within the scope of its current passenger aircraft development projects,” adds Walter Stephan.

CSeries
The CSeries* aircraft are Bombardier Aerospace's new family of commercial airliners for the 100- to 149-seat market segment. The CSeries family of aircraft combines advanced materials, leading-edge technology and proven methods to meet commercial airline requirements in 2013 and beyond and the aircraft’s clean-sheet design is ensuring that they will achieve greatly reduced fuel burn noise and emissions, as well as superior operational flexibility, exceptional airfield performance and will provide passengers with a best-in-class, widebody cabin environment in a single-aisle aircraft.

FACC designed and delivered the initial Flight Test Vehicle (FTV) wing-to-body fairings in the development phase of the all-new CSeries aircraft. The 15-metre long fairing elements, consisting of 73 composite assemblies, were made at FACC Aerostructures in Ried, Austria. For the implementation, FACC was able to leverage synergies with the Challenger aircraft project and benefit from its vast experience in the fairings segment.

Global 7000/8000: ultra-light weight design
From a global perspective, the new Global 7000 and Global 8000 business jets are in a class of their own. They permit transoceanic nonstop flights in the highest level of travel comfort. This way, they link Sydney with Los Angeles and Hong Kong with New York, for an upscale clientele. The Global 7000 and Global 8000 jets will be able to achieve exceptional range of 13,520 km and 14,631 km at Mach 0.85 respectively and will have an outstanding high speed cruise capability of Mach 0.90.It is obvious that every single gram on this plane counts, including those on the wing-to-body fairings. Consequently, the expectations FACC's development team has to satisfy are commensurately high.

The production and industrialization of the components has been scheduled to support Bombardier Aerospace’s program scheduled for entry-into-service in 2016. Technically, the wing-to-body fairing of the Global 7000 and Global 8000 aircraft is lighter, and, with its 16-metre design length, also longer than that of the CSeries aircraft.

FACC’s leadership
The guarantee for the successful development of the wing-to-body fairings is FACC’s distinct leadership in technologies and solutions as a systems integrator in combination with excellent team work and the tireless commitment of FACC’s staff.
